The bright spot for Connecticut Republicans in this crazy election cycle was in the state legislature where Democrats no longer hold the so-called “veto-proof’ majorities. The GOP picked up 14 seats in the state House and three, possibly four, in the state Senate.
One surprise was the defeat of state Rep. Steve Fontana lost his seat to challenger Dave Yaccarino. Fontana was busy lining up the votes of his colleagues for majority leader. The Hanging Shad wrote back on Oct. 28th about the fact that Fontana and others seeking leadership posts would be smart to keep their eyes on the ball.
In the state Senate, longtime state Sen. Tom Colapietro (D-Bristol) lost his seat to Republican Jason Welch.
Meanwhile the statewide constitutional offices all went to Democrats with George Jepsen (attorney general), Kevin Lembo (comptroller), Denise Nappier (treasurer), and Denise Merrill (secretary of state) all claiming victory.
