The old saying goes “never get into a war with people who buy ink by the barrel” or in this case, post their stories electronically. It appears that Laurie Rubiner, chief of staff for US Sen. Richard Blumenthal, apparently didn’t get the memo.

The Connecticut Mirror reported on Blumenthal’s comments regarding the historic Roe v. Wade Supreme Court case that legalized abortion. “I’m new to the Senate but I’m not new to this battle. Since the days of Roe v. Wade, when I clerked for Justice Blackmun, as a state legislator, as attorney general, I have fought this battle.” Republicans are now having a fit because Roe was already decided by the time Blumenthal clerked for Blackmun. There are now comparisons to the flap over Blumenthal having said he served in Vietnam when he was actually a reservist stateside.

But the bigger issue is what Rubiner said to Mirror reporter Dierdre Shesgreen when she was putting her story together. Rubiner said to Shesgreen, “This is a very unfair route you are going down,” she said. “We’ll remember this.” That’s not smart, not professional and more should be expected from the chief of staff for a United States senator. But let’s leave it at that. We have all said stupid things in the heat of the moment. An apology should be issued by Rubiner and let’s move on.

As for Blumenthal’s comments about Roe, they don’t even come close to the Vietnam situation. The case may have been decided before Blumenthal clerked for Blackmun but the issue certainly didn’t just disappear. It was front and center for years. Blumenthal’s work on women’s reproduction rights and health is beyond reproach.
