The news about UConn in general and the sports programs in particular continues to be troubling to those who support the school with their tax dollars. Amid the financial abuses that have been well-documented and questions about a no-bid state contract to care for prisoners that has raised eyebrows of some lawmakers, comes a new report that of all the teams in NCAA basketball tournament that gets under this week, UConn is near the bottom in academic performance.
The Shad has called for an investigation of the misuse of taxpayers’ money at UConn and it seems as though every day there is another reason for increased, independent oversight of the state’s flagship university. Gov. Dannel Malloy should have included UConn in his creative and money-saving restructuring of public, higher education. And this latest academic report is just the latest reason for him to do so.
