Wandering around the lobby of the (newly renovated) New Haven Hotel feels like a bit of a high school reunion—people getting reacquainted, catching up, asking about families, how the year has gone, etc. Of course in this case, your high school class would have had to be made up of the greatest tennis players in the world.
The New Haven Open at Yale presented by First Niagara Bank (I figure if I write it and say it enough, I won’t make the ultimate professional sporting event mistake and call the event by its former name in front of the new sponsors in a stadium of thousands of people) is underway and its field of players this year is phenomenal.
Three-time defending champion and no. 1 in the world “Sweet” Caroline Wozniacki is back to defend her title but she faces serious challenges. French Open champion and world no.5 Li Na; no. 8 Francesca Schiavone (who rolled her opponent yesterday); and no. 9 Marion Bartoli are all in the field, eager to knock off Caroline and head into the US Open on the highest possible note.
This year’s event has some new features on and off the courts including a fantastic effort to promote breast cancer awareness and prevention. The weather is suppose to be excellent all week so check it all out and get the family out for this great happening.
