This Election Matters; Let’s Act Like It

Just when you thought things couldn’t get any stranger in the historic Connecticut US Senate race, the candidates debate and all we can do is argue about whether Republican Linda McMahon pulled a Joe Biden-Neil Kinnock with her jobs plan. To be honest, I don’t care where she got her plan from and the only thing I can glean from this latest “controversy” is her campaign manager is a boorish, mope who somehow finds it appropriate to verbally attack reporters like some 1920s gangster.

In short, Democratic candidate Chris Murphy cleaned McMahon’s clock in Sunday’s “Face the State” debate, forcing her to revert back to the tired, negative attacks we’ve heard since she beat Chris Shays in the primary (it seems more and more like Shays was right about her). I look for Murphy to bump back up in the next set of polls.

However, more stunning is the fact that we still don’t know what we would get in a “Sen. McMahon.” Does she support a Paul Ryan-type budget? It seems she can’t run away fast enough from the national Republican platform. But who knows? Will she throw down her body to protect more tax cuts for the richest in our country? Not sure. At least now we know she would vote to repeal the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Of course, it took a “Superfly Jimmy Snuka” flip to come around to that one. Do we really want to repeal Obamacare?

I think in the closing weeks, we’d all be better served with more substance and less nonsense. It matters.
