Expect McMahon to End Campaign the Way She Started—With a Barrage of Negative Attacks

The debates are done. The one-on-one confrontations are over. The only thing between now and Election Day for the nationally watched Linda McMahon – Chris Murphy race is time. Time for McMahon to spend millions more on negative advertising and mail against Murphy. It’s the only chance she has after dismal performances in the debates in which she struggled to show she had a grasp of the issues or any knowledge of how to fix the nation’s problems.

It seems to The Shad that the only reason McMahon is close in this race is because she effectively battered Murphy with a slew of negative ads and accusations immediately after the two won their respective primaries. Murphy was slow to respond as McMahon painted him as a deadbeat in his finances and corrupt by getting a special, sweetheart deal from his mortgage holder. Of course, there is not a shred of evidence that was true.

Murphy recovered nicely with strong performances in all three debates—when substance not millions of dollars counted most. Murphy leads by six points in the latest UConn-Hartford Courant poll but with 17 percent undecided. A Sienna College poll has the two in a statistical tie.

Meanwhile, consider these “McMahon Follies”:
1. McMahon has done everything she can to avoid the news media. She has now gone a step beyond by claiming it’s the media’s fault she won’t release her ideas for reforming Social Security. “Thanks to all of you folks in the media, you’re the ones who primarily do it [demagogue the issue] and bash any of the suggestions that might be made to improve the Social Security, Medicare,” CTNewsJunkie reported the candidate as saying. Wow. McMahon is actually admitting she won’t tell the people she wants to represent in the United States Senate what she plans because she doesn’t like the way the media reports it. That’s stunning.

2. The WWE, the source of McMahon’s fortune and her claim to being a keen businesswomen and job-creator, has once again applied for tax assistance from the state. In 2009, the Stamford-based company received $10 million in tax credits from the state while laying off 10 percent of its workforce. McMahon, running the company back then, made $45 million that year.

3. Getting more and more attention is a documentary film detailing the shocking culture of sex and violence portrayed by the WWE when Linda McMahon was in control. “Wrestling with Manhood” should be the death knell for the McMahon candidacy. It’s hard to imagine anyone, particularly women, going into the voting booth and choosing her. You can see excerpts of the documentary here and here.

4. McMahon, who has battled charges that she is trying to buy a Senate seat for the second time in two years, has spent $78 million of her fortune in that effort. There’s no reason to believe that won’t climb towards $100 before it’s all said and done. Amazing.
