ENFIELD HIGH GRADUATES; SHOULD FLYING MESSAGE HAVE BEEN BANNED?

Enfield High School seniors finally did what high school seniors do—they graduated. The outside groups that felt the need to stick their noses in the town’s business weren’t there because there was no publicity to be gained for them yesterday.

The Shad is on a strange side in the argument over whether holding the graduation ceremonies for both Enfield and Enrico Fermi high schools in the structure that also houses First Cathedral Church in Bloomfield would have been unconstitutional. Still unexplained is how holding the ceremonies there would have constituted a government endorsement of a particular religion.

The Shad believes in local control of education and if the elected school board makes a decision, it should be clearly demonstrated why before the courts should change it.

By the way, a plane flew over the ceremonies yesterday pulling a banner that read, “God is here today.” Shouldn’t the plane have been grounded? After all, some people attending the public event that was the graduation may have felt uncomfortable seeing it.
