Connecticut bell factory owner Matt Bevin was soundly defeated in the Kentucky Republican primary for US Senate, unable to overcome an entrenched incumbent, some last minute campaign gaffes and the failure of the tea party to continue its winning ways across the country.
US Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, who at one point was thought to be vulnerable because the tea party was backing Bevin, prevailed 60 percent to 35 percent for Bevin. McConnell now has a spirited general election against Democratic state Attorney General Allison Lundergan Grimes.
Bevin is a fairly well-known name as the owner of the Bevin Bell factory, the nation’s only remaining such operation. The East Hampton factory burned to the ground in May of 2012 but Bevin, with the support of the state and the community, rebuilt it. It continues to operate today.
