CALIGIURI WOULD VOTE FOR MIDDLE CLASS (OR ANY) TAX CUTS; SAYS MURPHY AND PELOSI ARE ‘ONE AND THE SAME’

State Senator and Republican Congressional candidate Sam Caligiuri of Waterbury says he would vote in favor of a bill that would extend tax cuts for the middle class even if that bill ended tax cuts for the wealthy. Caligiuri was a guest on FOX-CT (61)’s “The Real Story.” The Shad co-hosted two segments of the show with host Laurie Perez, questioning the candidate.

Caligiuri has been working hard to unseat popular incumbent Democrat Chris Murphy in Connecticut’s 5th congressional district. He made it clear he favors extending all the G.W. Bush-era tax cuts, saying they’re needed to help small business and to get the economy moving again. But when put on the spot, he said he would vote in favor of a bill to extend the cuts for only the middle class if put in that position.

On other issues, Caligiuri said he opposes any effort to privatize social security and bemoans the fact that there has been no cost of living increase for SS recipients.

Caligiuri’s campaign strategy is clearly to tie Murphy to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. After a segment in which every reference about his opponent was “Murphy-Pelosi,” I asked him if the two are one and the same. He said, “yes” and went on to say Murphy votes with Pelosi nearly 100% of the time. I then asked him if he could “forget Murphy for a moment” and articulate some things he wanted to do in Congress (you’ll have to watch the show for the answers—I’m not spoiling the whole show). He did so but couldn’t answer without again saying “Murphy-Pelosi.” At least he’s sticking to his game plan.

“The Real Story” airs Sunday morning at 10:30 or online.
