What Trump Didn’t Ask Comey Is Disturbing (and Other Follow-Ups to an Historic Week)

Fired FBI Director James Comey’s historic and entirely credible testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee has caused ripples that likely won’t stop for some time. But consider this: In all of Comey’s conversations with the president—those on the phone or in person—why didn’t Trump ever ask about the Russian attack on our Democracy? In what can arguably be considered an act of war, Russian operatives tried to influence our election. And our commander-in-chief never asks our FBI director about it?

Comey testified in no uncertain terms that Trump wanted him to drop the probe of former NSA Michael Flynn and his contacts with Russia. So the president was concerned about Flynn’s interactions with the Russians but not the Russians’ attack on our election process or what the FBI is doing to make sure it didn’t happen again? Doesn’t that seem a bit odd?

Trump spokesman Sarah Huckabee Sanders was put in a position post-hearings of having to deny Trump was a liar.

For real? In the first 137 days Trump’s been in office,.the Washington Post’s nonpartisan fact checkers have documented 623 times he made false and misleading claims. Here they are.

For more of a Comey said v. Trump said, the Post put this video together.

Trump continues to play important issues like it’s some sort of reality show. Did the president record his conversations with Comey? First, Trump tweeted that Comey “better hope” there aren’t such tapes. Then, since Comey brought it up (he said he hopes there are tapes), reporters asked Trump Friday if recordings exist.

Like a “be-sure-not-to-miss-the-season-finale” response, Trump said he would let everyone know about the existence of tapes “…in a short period of time. I’m not hinting at anything…You’re going to be very disappointed when you hear the answer,” he said. So we need to tune in…same Trump-time…same Trump-station.

As for the Trump spokespeople on the tapes, Sean Spicer said he didn’t know and Sanders said he had no idea but that she’d “look under the couches.” Just what we need a drapes-wearing comedian busting out about such an enormously important issue.

Did it really matter to Republicans what Comey was going to say Thursday? The Wall Street Journal reports that the Republican National Committee dispatched 60…that’s right…60! staff members to operate an anti-Comey “war room.”
