In what were dumbfounding, head-shaking and mind-numbing statements even by this president’s standards, an attorney for Donald Trump couldn’t keep his assertions straight, contradicting himself several times in the same appearance and leaving interviewers flabbergasted Sunday morning.
Attorney Jay Sekulow appeared on several Sunday morning talk shows and directly contradicted President Trump’s own words and then his own as to whether Trump is under investigation in the probe into Russian interfering in the 2016 election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.
Trump tweeted the following on Friday.
I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director! Witch Hunt
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 16, 2017
Sekulow told TV viewers in essence, “Don’t believe your eyes.”
But just as Sekulow was telling the country the president isn’t under investigation, he reversed course and said he was under investigation.
Sunday morning talk show hosts pushed back to various extent. CNN’s Jake Tapper, host of “State of the Union,” was absolutely perplexed.
Chris Wallace, host of “FOX News Sunday,” got angry and pushed back hard.
Author Carl Sandberg is often quoted as saying, “If the facts are against you, argue the law. If the law is against you, argue the facts. If the law and the facts are against you, pound the table and yell like hell.”
Sekulow may not have pounded the table but the facts and the law were against him and he became incredulous saying he wanted to be “crystal clear” which of course, he wasn’t even close to being.
Sekulow’s rounds on the Sunday morning shows were microcosms of this presidency—don’t believe what you see; believe the last thing I say; never mind what I just said, the other is true. Simply unbelievable.
